Yacht Bow & Stern Thruster Installation & Repair

Master Every Docking Maneuver with Precision Power.

Docking a vessel in the challenging currents and winds of South Florida requires absolute confidence in your thruster system. Whether you are looking to install a new Bow Thruster for better control or your Stern Thruster needs urgent motor repair, our specialized yacht services team ensures your maneuvering systems are responsive and reliable. We provide expert installation and technical service for the industry’s leading brands, ensuring you never have to worry about tight slips or heavy crosswinds again.

  • Custom Installations: Professional retrofitting of tunnel thrusters (Bow) and external units (Stern) for both fiberglass and aluminum hulls.

  • Motor & Solenoid Repair: Comprehensive diagnostics and repair for DC, AC, and hydraulic thruster motors.

  • Control System Upgrades: Installation of joysticks, wireless remotes, and proportional control systems for smoother docking.

  • Driveline Maintenance: Replacement of shear pins, gear leg oil changes, and propeller blade inspection to prevent vibration and noise.

Thrusters often sit idle for weeks, making them prone to marine growth and electrical corrosion. Regular service prevents:

  • Solvent Seizure: Stuck solenoids that keep the thruster running (a major fire and battery risk).

  • Zinc Failure: Rapid electrolysis that can destroy your gear leg.

  • Battery Depletion: Faulty wiring or aging batteries that fail exactly when you need full power during docking.

Component Maintenance Task Frequency Safety Benefit
Anodes (Zincs) Inspect and replace on propeller and gear leg Every 6 Months Prevents expensive galvanic corrosion of the lower unit.
Propeller Blades Remove marine growth and check for chips/cracks Quarterly Ensures maximum thrust and eliminates vibration.
Solenoids/Relays Clean terminals and test for “sticking” Annually Prevents the thruster from getting “stuck on” in a dock.
Gear Leg Oil Check for water intrusion or change oil Annually Protects internal gears from friction and salt damage.
Battery Bank Load test dedicated thruster batteries Bi-Annually Guarantees full power is available during emergency docking.

We provide mobile bow thruster services across all major marinas and private docks in the region. We serve all of South Florida.

FAQ

Why does my bow thruster only work for a few seconds and then stop?

This is typically caused by voltage drop. Thrusters draw an immense amount of current. If your batteries are weak, or if there is corrosion on the cables, the voltage will drop under load, causing the thermal protection or the solenoid to trip. We recommend a dedicated battery bank located close to the thruster to solve this.

A grinding or “screeching” noise usually indicates a failing gear leg or a broken shear pin. It can also be caused by a large piece of debris (like a piece of wood or a thick rope) caught in the tunnel. Stop using the thruster immediately to avoid burning out the electric motor.

Yes. Most vessels that have a bow thruster can be retrofitted with a stern thruster. We specialize in external pod-style thrusters (like those from Side-Power) that bolt onto the transom, providing 360-degree control of the vessel without major hull reconstruction.

We service and install the industry’s most reliable names, including Side-Power (Sleipner), Vetus, Max Power, and Lewmar. These brands offer the best parts availability in the South Florida region, ensuring faster repair times.
